Name:
Penny Grant, Market Manager – Shaw + Smith
What was your ‘watershed’ wine moment?
I think I was about 16 and my mum gave me a small glass of 1996 Sassicaia. It was the first time I really looked at wine in a different way, and sparked my desire to pursue a career in wine.
How would you describe your wine collection?
Growing!! Mostly consists of Champagne, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay from various regions.
What is the most recent addition to your cellar?
2016 Bell Hill Chardonnay. It’s often hard to get and as far as Kiwi benchmarks go this is hard to beat. Intense fruit concentration, speaks entirely of place and holds it ground amongst the greats.
If you could only take two things to a desert island (that has a fridge), what would they be?
White Burgundy and KFC
What do you think the wine industry will see more or less of in 2021?
In 2021 we’ll see more 100% Aussie wine lists, never has it been more important to drink local. The industry will rally to support Australian wineries, brewers and distillers.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to start their career in wine?
Find a good mentor, stick with them and take every opportunity to learn from your peers.
Shaw + Smith is the proud sponsor of Jarrett Michael Buffington in the Best Sommelier of Australia 2020.
