This week let’s feature John Mackinnon for the ‘Spotlight on Committee’ series…

After a decade in the Canadian hospitality scene, John sought for change and landed in Australia – and we are grateful for his presence in our industry. He is part of the New South Wales Committee for Sommeliers Australia.

John spent some time working at large hospitality groups including Solotel and Shangri-La Hotels in Australia. He received his DipWSET in 2015, and in 2016, was awarded ‘Best Listing of Australian Wine’ by Wine Australia while he was the Executive Sommelier at Altitude Restaurant in Shangri-La Hotel Sydney.

Since then, in pursue of a full career in wine, John went on to experience different aspects of the wine industry. This includes working through vintages across both hemispheres, working in cellar doors, and getting involved in the wholesale and retail sphere in Canada and in New Zealand.

John currently runs Operations and Sales at Andrew Jamieson Wine Merchants. No matter where John finds himself, his penchant for local wines will never cease.
