I AM:
Benjamin Moechtar, General Manager & Licensee of The Norfolk House & Hotel (NSW & National Exec. Committee)
I BECAME A COMMITTEE MEMBER TO:
I’ve always viewed Sommeliers Australia as a vehicle for education, connection and change. There is a real community within the committee that extends to and reflects the principles of its members. As a Committee member I feel a real sense of purpose and pride.
MY BACKGROUND IS:
Multicultural; father from Jakarta, Indonesia and mother from Bega, S-NSW. My mother’s family traces its genealogy to the settlement of Jerrawa and the families of the brothers Arthur and Jeremiah Bush.
THE MOTTO I LIVE BY IS:
Truth is the beginning of every good.
MY ROLE MODEL IS:
Our profession teaches us humility & service. Oftentimes we are silent, present, but remain as shadows stretching from table to kitchen. And life outside the “venue” can be very, very different.

In my down time it’s nice to be with a friend who grounds me, uses the odd expletive, and calls me out when I am being unlike myself.

It’s a rare gift to have a friend that trusts you enough not to help you until you ask.

Thank you Simon!

THE PERFECT MEAL WOULD BE:
Family dinner, roast chicken and a decent bottle of chardy.
WHAT I ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A PART OF THE WINE INDUSTRY IS
If you look at the positives of the industry, there are many and it can be amazingly seductive. You just need to be able to open yourself to new, while respecting the old.
