Introducing Clotilde Candusso — Freyja Melbourne Introducing Clotilde Candusso — Freyja Melbourne

We're pleased to announce Clotilde Candusso @clotilde_cdn as one of the talented sommeliers selected for the 2026 Sommelier Challenge: Finding Australia's Best Sommelier of the Year.

Originally from Avignon in the south of France, Clotilde moved to Australia to explore its wine culture and quickly fell in love with the country's wine regions, people and stories. Since arriving, she has travelled extensively, visited wineries across the country, achieved her Advanced Sommelier certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers Oceania, and built a career creating thoughtful wine programs. Clotilde is currently the head sommelier at Melbournes Freyja @freyjamelbourne

"I believe sustainable viticulture is essential to shaping the future of the wine industry. I'm excited to continue learning about wine, the people and cultures behind it, and sharing knowledge with other talented sommeliers." — Clotilde Candusso

Clotilde is supported by Gold Sponsor House of Arras @houseofarras for the 2026 Sommelier Challenge.

"House of Arras is honoured to partner with Sommeliers Australia. We are equally passionate about the role that sommeliers play in building knowledge, advocacy and loyalty with consumers for Australian wine." — Danika Windrim, House of Arras

Congratulations to Clotilde, and thank you to House of Arras for sharing our vision, and for supporting the extraordinary sommelier talent that exists within Australia today.

Sommeliers Australia is proud to announce the four Sommeliers Australia is proud to announce the four finalists competing for the 2026 Sommelier Challenge: Finding Australia's Best Sommelier of the Year, taking place on Monday, 6 July 2026 in the iconic Sydney Tower at one hatted restaurant Infinity by Mark Best (@markbest)

After progressing through a highly competitive selection process, finalists Justin Biskup (CARPE VINO @carpe_vino__ , VIC), Clotilde Candusso (Freyja @freyjamelbourne, VIC), Isaac Pockney (Bennelong @bennelong_sydney, NSW) and Paolo Saccone MS (LUCAS Restaurants @lucascollective, NSW) will now face a series of written, tasting, practical and theory examinations as they compete for the title of Australia's Best Sommelier.

More than 30 sommeliers from across Australia applied to participate in the nation's premier wine service competition. After undergoing a rigorous online interview featuring questions reflecting Master Sommelier, WSET Diploma, and ASI Diploma level standards designed to test technical knowledge and industry expertise, these four outstanding finalists have secured their place in the final stage of the competition.

Judges for this year’s Sommelier Challenge include noted professionals in the industry including Sommeliers Australia President Louella Mathews (@louthesomm), Master Sommelier Andreas Aragon (@andres10aragon_ms) & Sarah Andrew DipWSET (@sarahandrewwine) (previous Sommeliers Australia President). Previous winners for the Sommelier Challenge include Chris Ryan, Rajat Bhatia, Adrian Filiuta MS and Leanne Altmann (the inaugural winner in 2014).

The winner of the 2026 Sommelier Challenge will earn the honour of representing the nation on behalf of Sommeliers Australia at the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) Best Sommelier of the World 2026 competition, to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11–17 October 2026.

The Sommelier Challenge would not be possible without the generous support of our Gold Partners: Ruinart (@ruinart), House of Arras (@houseofarras), Jim Barry (@jimbarrywines) and Pewsey Vale (@pewseyvalevineyard). Their commitment to excellence in wine service and education helps elevate the profession across Australia.
