Enigmatic, mystical and unforgiving, Priorat is an Enigmatic, mystical and unforgiving, Priorat is another miracle story forged in the world of wine. Let’s #somm101.⁣
Set in Catalonia and cradled within Serra Montsant, Priorat is distinctive. It is hot and dry, with steep terraces and rocky soil, making it one of the most difficult regions to grow grapes. It has some of the lowest yields in the world, averaging at 5 hL per ha. In comparison, the rest of Spain averages at 25hL per ha.

As one of only two DOCa in Spain, it’s focus on Grenache, or Garnacha, pairs it with only one other fine wine region – Chateauneuf du Pape. Usually seen as a workhorse grape, Garnacha, when grown bush-trained in the famous low-nutrient Priorat llicorella slate, transforms into full-bodied, ageworthy wines that enchants with balsam and orange notes.

Making wines since the 1100s, turmoil began with phylloxera in 1893. Replanting with rootstock helped, but the political landscape did not. The Spanish Civil War, and then WW2, upended viticulture in Priorat. Stuck in postwar fascism, people were forced to find work in the city, and vineyards were abandoned. Carinena, or Carignan, was favoured for its bigger crops. By late 80s, only 750ha of vineyard land remained, with 70% planted to Carinena.

The revival of Priorat in the 80s' was ushered in by the ‘Gang of Five’ – Rene Barbier, Alvaro Palacios, Daphne Glorian, Joseph Lluis Perez and Carles Pastrana. They sourced old vines from five ‘clos’ and made a single wine together, then bottled it under each of their own labels. The wines caught the attention of one Robert Parker, and from there, the fortunes of Priorat turned overnight.

Today on our Spotlight on Committee series, we hav Today on our Spotlight on Committee series, we have Marcell Kustos @molecular_sommelier...⁣
Marcell’s dedication and passion in wine education is at the forefront of his approach as a committee member for South Australia.

Having grown up surrounded by his family’s vineyards in Hungary, wine became a lifelong pursuit for Marcell, which saw him receive his PhD in Wine Science and Consumer Behaviour from the University of Adelaide.

His experiences include managing the beverage programs at the esteemed Penfolds Magill Estate and Restaurant Botanic; as a winemaker for LUDO Wines, which he founded in 2018; and as a fine wine and hospitality consultant, through his own Marcell Kustos Wine Concierge.

He loves how hospitality has no borders, gender, race or age, and is inspired to learn from one another in this industry.
