This prestigious national initiative celebrates the excellence, education, professionalism, and community that define Australia’s wine industry, with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion at its core.
Taking place in Sydney from 6–8 July 2026, the Sommelier Challenge is a two-day program desined to educate, elevate, and connect. It will bring together six of the country’s leading sommeliers for an immersive experience featuring masterclasses in service, deductive tasting, and wine knowledge. The program will culminate in a comprehensive assessment across these disciplines to determine the overall winner.
Participants will be evaluated by Australia’s foremost wine educators and Master Sommeliers, who will also provide mentorship and leadership throughout the initiative.
While a winner will be announced at the conclusion of the Challenge, Sommeliers Australia emphasises that this experience is about more than competition. It is about the journey—building meaningful connections between contestants and mentors, gaining invaluable experience, and strengthening the bonds within the sommelier and wine community.
Beyond the competition, the initiative highlights the evolving role of the modern sommelier as a cultural ambassador—someone who represents Australia’s world-class hospitality standards, champions regional diversity, and communicates the story of Australian wine on a global stage.
The winner will go on to represent Australia at the ASI Best Sommelier of the World 2026 Competition in Lisbon, Portugal, from 11–17 October 2026.
