Where: Canopy Bar, 188 Hindley Street
Date: Tuesday, 21st of April
Time:12pm-4pm

HELLO AMIGOS DE ADELAIDE!
Scott’s coming home to SA in a couple of weeks and you are invited to come meet/taste with him.

Here’s the lineup, you have two ways to play it.

  • Sit around the big table for a semi-formal masterclass tour of what’s going on RN around Iberia. It’ll run through from midday until 2pm. CLICK HERE TO BOOK INTO THE MIDDAY MASTERCLASS – don’t be late and there will be snacks!
  • Or, come and taste casually from 2pm until 4pm (at which point Scott’s flight back to Melbourne will be beckoning, so please don’t rock up at 3.45pm hoping to taste and hang with Scott).

THE WINE SELECTION ON OFFER – largely based on new stuff we’ve augmented our view of Iberia with reasonably recently
ATLANTIC
New premium pour Galician white: FORMIGO Treixadura, DO RIBEIRO $28.50
Perfect blend of fruit, savoury, mineral gives a brilliant value textured/fresh pouring wine

Rare Galician superstar white: LUIS ANXO Treixadura, DO RIBEIRO $85
This is Spain’s definitive answer to Emedio Pepe (but you’ll note it’s only $85). Can’t remember the last time I opened one of these masterpieces!

New lighter red from Dão (you could argue continental here, easily enough).
CASA da PASSARELLA ‘Somontes’ Single Vineyard Touriga-Jaen-Alfrocheiro $22.50
Delightful, round, easy and characterful, it’s a bargain and the only question after you list it is “am I gonna offer it chilled, or not?”

MARCO de JEREZ
Not just a new Maker – a whole damned new town!
MEET el PIRAÑA – THE winemaker of Trebujena: el Piraña Palomino just $35 list LUC
Juan Pulido personally defines one of the 9 pueblos of Marco de Jerez and his entry Palomino is a definitive ‘wheat-chalk-salt’ expression, savoury salty satisfying.

ALBERO ALBERO ALBERO ALBERO, that’s ALBERO x4. ALBERO MANZANILLA EN RAMA SACA #4 $45.
I make it. I’m proud of it. You’re gonna love it!

MEDITERRANEAN
HA HA – I FOUND A LOVEABLE BOBAL!!
Meet ROSALIA MOLINA’S ‘Altolandon’ single vineyard Bobal grown at 1050 metres in Manchuela. $28.50 – SNAP!
Long since unlovable, Bobal has been the rustic by product of very poor co-op growing on the remote, poverty-stricken la Mancha fringe. Heavy and dull no more once a bright young viticulturalist who knows what they’re doing comes to town.

From PEPE MENDOZA, Wine King of Alicante come new releases of wines we’ve not had for a couple of years:
MERSEGUERA White blend $40, MONASTRELL-GIRÓ $40, GIRÓ de Aubargues $85, el VENENO single vineyard Monastrell $85
I love telling the story of how Pepe’s delicious wines come to be both so reflective of their Mediterranean upbringing AND YET so damned fresh, refreshing and pretty. This is a WOW! set of wines.

CONTINENTAL
FROM RIOJA, NOT 1, BUT 2 NEW VILLAGES. You can even have a set of steak knives.
FROM iron-inflected hillslopes above 600m in the southern foothills town of BRIONES, meet the Vino del Pueblo Briones of MIGUEL MERINO $55.

From sandstone above 600m in ABALOS in the northern foothills, meet the Vino del Pueblo Abalos of ABEICA $35.
ABEICA also give us an outrageously good, chillable Carbonic Joven, way more than silly-fruity, really interesting and a bargain at $22.50.

AND, to round things off, there’s one last thing from Scott … version 4 of his Clarete!
CLARÍTO 2023, mixing 2/3 Viura white, 1/3 Garnacha red, lots of skins time, lots of air time in raw concrete, the ultimate textural light pink $28.50

And, in Old-not-old news, URBINA Estate Rioja 2015 $37.50.
Yes, ma’am, wine over 12 yo in perfect condition, zero bottle variance at check the price. Delicious village wine from Cuzcurrita del Rio Tiron.
