Let’s start off this week with an introduction to David Newman for our ‘Spotlight on Committee’ series…

An invaluable member of the Tasmania Committee, David is a steadfast figure in the Tasmanian wine scene, having climbed up the ranks working at both the service and the business side of the industry.

A Certified Sommelier, David’s strong customer skills has led him across the board of venue styles, from high-volume popular joints like The Smith, to acclaimed wine bar Harry and Frankie, and luxury boutique hotel, Saffire Freycinet.

His passion for wines brought him to manage the cellar door of Stefano Lubiana, where he also assisted in winery operations. His experience working in sales at Izway Wines gave him a different perspective of the industry, broadening his skills.

He is now the on-premise representative for Samuel Smith & Son Negociants in Tasmania.

In 2021, he went on to begin his bachelor’s degree in Wine Science, cementing his dedication to learning more for his craft.
