SUMMARY:[VIC] Warriors of Wine - Fundraising Long Lunch - MELBOURNE
DESCRIPTION:Warriors of Wine returns to Melbourne on Sunday 1 June for a unique and interactive dining experience\, bringing together three top Melbourne sommeliers in a friendly yet competitive challenge. \nWe are delighted to announce this year’s competitors: \n\nChristina Kaigg-Hoxley (67 Pall Mall)\nBarney Reilly (Cutler)\nBonnie Spain (Marmelo)\n\nOver a three-course lunch\, each ‘warrior’ will carefully select and present a wine to pair with each dish. At the end of each course\, guests will rank the wine pairings using a Brownlow-style voting system: \n\n3 tokens for their favourite pairing\n2 tokens for their second choice\n1 token for their third choice\n\nThe Sommeliers Australia committee will count the tokens at the end of each round and announce the course winner. The sommelier with the most votes overall will be crowned Warrior of Wine Melbourne 2025. \nBeyond the competition\, this event is a critical fundraiser for Sommeliers Australia\, supporting its ongoing work in the industry. The afternoon will also feature an auction and raffle\, with the chance to take home exceptional wine-related goodies and hospitality experiences. \nJoin us at Cutler for an afternoon of celebrating the craft of the Sommelier\, outstanding food and wine\, and spirited competition – all for a great cause. \n  \nFurther information: \nTiming: Doors will open from 12pm for aperitifs\, with lunch starting at 12.30pm which will conclude around 4pm. \nSeating: Seating will be on shared tables\, with seating allocated on the day. \nMenu: A set three-course menu\, plus cheese course. Please ensure dietary requirements are made known at the time of booking. \n  \nMore about this year’s Melbourne Warriors: \nChristina Kaigg-Hoxley is the Wine Development Manager at 67 Pall Mall Melbourne. She recently returned from London\, where she was Assistant Head Sommelier at the two-Michelin-starred Clove Club. Her experience includes roles at Gimlet at Cavendish House\, Atlas Vinifera\, and Burch Family Wines. A Sommeliers Australia Education Scholarship recipient and Wine Scholars Guild Educator\, she holds WSET Level 3 and has worked vintages in the Yarra Valley and Margaret River. Christina is also a freelance wine writer\, with work published in Halliday Magazine\, Vine & Bubble\, and Gourmet Traveller Wine. \nBarney Reilly began his wine career at Cutler & Marion after working in Yarra Valley restaurants. Post-lockdown\, he moved to Melbourne\, starting as a bartender at Marion Wine Bar\, where his passion for wine grew through inspiring colleagues and WSET studies. Transitioning to Cutler\, he refined his wine service skills and earned his CMS Certified qualification. His dedication led to his promotion to Senior Sommelier\, where he continues to develop his expertise. \nBonnie Spain fell in love with wine while working in venues across Geelong before moving to Melbourne in 2019. She joined The Spanish Acquisition\, immersing herself in the diverse world of Iberian wine. Returning to hospitality\, she is now Assistant Head Sommelier at Marmelo Restaurant\, where she curates a list specialising in Portuguese and Iberian varieties. Bonnie is currently pursuing her WSET Diploma. \n

SUMMARY:[SA] Blind Tasting Group #4
DESCRIPTION:Blind tasting is one of the most effective ways to refine your palate\, but it often comes with challenges – it can be expensive\, time-consuming\, and intimidating. \nTo make blind tasting more accessible\, Sommeliers Australia has recently introduced a dedicated tasting group in Adelaide. These sessions have already proven to be highly successful\, providing a structured and supportive environment for wine professionals\, students\, and enthusiasts. \nEach session runs for one hour\, allowing you to focus purely on what’s in the glass. Simply book\, turn up\, taste\, and develop your skills with expert guidance from host Sally Johnson (Lecturer and Diploma Academic Support Manager at the Wines and Spirits School\, TAFE SA). \nThroughout the session\, you’ll taste four wines – two whites and two reds – carefully selected for their typicity\, representing a diverse mix of varieties\, origins\, quality levels\, and price points. At the conclusion of each bracket\, your host will provide key insights and practical techniques to help refine your tasting approach. \nThis tasting group is ideal for industry professionals looking for structured blind tasting practice\, WSET and CMS students preparing for exams\, or anyone wanting to challenge and expand their palate.

SUMMARY:[NSW] Terroirs of Grenache
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association\, Sommeliers Australia are hosting a tasting event focusing on the impressive capacity that Grenache has as a carrier for terroir. \nJoin our hosts Paddy Gilhooly (Thistledown Wines) and Jaime Clark (Joval) as they guide you through three flights of Grenache and discuss the influences of terroir according to the various examples. \nThe tasting will include twelve wines in total across three flights. The first two brackets will focus on examples from McLaren Vale\, comprising eight single vineyard wines from older sites. The first flight will highlight Grenache from Blewitt Springs old vines\, and the second flight will explore the slightly lower and warmer Onkaparinga Rocks and Whites Valley. The third bracket will showcase international examples from South Africa\, France\, and Spain. \nThe calibre of wines in the line-up makes this an event not to be missed. Expect to see examples from: Paralian\, Aphelion\, Bondar\, Maxwell Wines\, Sadie Family Wines\, and Daniel Landi. \nSeats are limited – book early to avoid disappointment. \n  \nNot a member yet?\nSommeliers Australia membership can be purchased throughout the year at a pro rata price and you can gain instant access to all the benefits of membership. \nWith automated renewal options now in place\, it’s never been easier to keep your membership up to date.
