New Zealand Wine 'SOMMIT' Scholarship 2018

New Zealand Winegrowers and Sommeliers Australia are excited to announce that New Zealand Wine International Sommelier Scholarship (Sommit) applications have opened for Australian sommeliers, offering them the opportunity to take part in a memorable wine experience across the ditch.

First launched in association with Sommeliers Australia in 2015, the scholarship is now a global initiative with sommeliers from Asia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Europe and USA set to join the Australian scholars in 2018.

Successful applicants will engage with and learn from some of the greatest minds in the business while sampling benchmark wines from New Zealand and the rest of the world on an intensive programme of up to 10 days, including one of two Sommits™.

Limited to just 20 attendees at each, the two Sommits™ held in Nelson and Central Otago will be attended exclusively by sommeliers and targeted exclusively to their interests. Hosted by Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas and Master of Wine Stephen Wong, the events are a celebration of the lesser known aspects of New Zealand wine, with particular emphasis on the facets that resonate with the sommelier community.

'This scholarship is a very, very special thing to offer our members. Rich in experience, great conversations and offers in depth knowledge that helps us to better understand our neighbours and assess the potential for our own lists and venues. Alongside so many laughs, great food, wine and company,' said President of Sommeliers Australia David Lawler following the 2017 scholarship experience.

To apply
Open to working 'Sommelier' members of Sommeliers Australia, the scholarships include international and domestic flights, accommodation, meals, transfers, event registration and all event inclusions.

Candidates are expected to have a strong passion for the wine industry, and be able to demonstrate a thirst for knowledge of New Zealand wine. A selection committee will review all applications with a shortlist of candidates invited to take part in a panel interview.

Application criteria
Applicants must:
be current 'Sommelier' members of Sommeliers Australia;
be actively working in the hospitality industry;
have WSET Level 2 or above, or have demonstrable equivalent industry experience.

Applications for Australia close Sunday 6 August 2017. A selection committee will review all applications with a shortlist of candidates invited to take part in an interview in August 2017.
